Scramble Knights changes genre to follow its strongest idea

Funktronic Labs explains why a battle royale became an adventure built around cooperative quests.

REPORTED FACTS

What was announced

Funktronic Labs' October 26 retrospective explains that Scramble Knights Online began as a battle royale. Playtest feedback favoured exploring with friends over competitive encounters, leading the team toward cooperative quests, a shared town and progression systems. The developers describe a quest-board prototype as pivotal. Its embedded store listing labels the release Game Preview.

OUR EDITORIAL PERSPECTIVE

Why the idea caught our attention

The interesting decision is choosing which pleasure deserves to organize the rest of a game. Exploration and elimination can pull a session in different directions: one encourages lingering, while the other gives an opponent a reason to interrupt. Removing a mode can therefore create more room for an existing strength instead of merely reducing variety. Players comparing cooperative games can ask a related question before committing: does the structure reward staying together, or simply allow friends to occupy the same map? A shared departure point and common objective can make intentions easier to coordinate. That is a useful design direction, while the unfinished release needs to earn its own judgments.
