THE ESSENTIALS How to play Place exactly one queen for every row of the board: six on Standard, eight on Hard or ten on Expert. No two queens may share a row, column or diagonal. Every queen involved in a current attack is marked. Select a square to place a queen, or select an existing queen to remove it. At most the required number can be placed. The board is complete only when all required queens are present and none attack one another. Controls Select a square, or focus it and press Enter or Space. Arrow keys move focus within the board. Undo reverses the previous placement or removal. Restart clears the same board. Change difficulty to choose a different board size. There is no New puzzle button because the empty starting position is fixed for each size. Good to know The N-queens problem is an established puzzle; this browser implementation and explanation are independently created.
These board sizes have solutions, but the game does not claim that a size has only one solution or reveal a preferred arrangement.
A lack of current conflicts does not prove that a partial arrangement can be completed. Use Undo when a later row has no useful square.
