Once Human turns a ship into a survival plan

The Isles of Abyss design retrospective connects modular building with a hostile ocean and several exploration layers.

REPORTED FACTS

What was announced

Once Human lead designer Vincent Tao's October 29 Xbox Wire retrospective examines its already released free expansion, Isles of Abyss. He describes five marine sectors that challenge different survival resources, modular vessels ranging from fast boats to floating fortresses, and an exploration loop connecting open water, islands and the seabed.

OUR EDITORIAL PERSPECTIVE

Why the idea caught our attention

Building becomes a strategic choice when the vehicle reflects what its crew expects to do next. A compact craft suggests a different set of priorities from a large mobile workshop, even before anyone sets sail. The useful planning question is therefore specific: what job must this design accomplish on the next outing? Answering that first can make equipment choices easier to explain and revisits more purposeful. A layered world can strengthen that loop if discoveries below the surface change how you prepare above it. The idea we would watch closely is whether hazards encourage several workable plans, rather than repeatedly demanding the same fully equipped solution.
